Brief Introduction to TCM and Stress Management

Overview

Stress can be a normal and even useful bodily response to events that occur in our lives. For example, we feel stress when we go on a job interview, take a test, or run a race. These kinds of short-term stresses are normal.

However, long-term (chronic) stress is the result of stressful situations that last over a long period of time - like problems at work or conflicts in our family. Over time, chronic stress can lead to severe health problems. It can cause physical and physiological changes in our body, and also affect our emotions. Long-term stress can be linked to more serious health problems such as high blood pressure, weakened immune system, anxiety, depression, heart disease, irritable bowel syndrome and asthma. Other examples include:

  • Physical symptoms: headache, stiff neck, tight shoulders, backache, constipation, upset stomach, nausea, diarrhea, or dizziness.
  • Emotional symptoms: moodiness, irritability, inability to relax, feeling of loneliness or dissatisfaction.
  • Behavioural symptoms: eating more or less, lack of sleep or excessive sleep, isolation, use of alcohol, cigarettes, or other habit-forming substances.
  • Cognitive symptoms: memory loss, poor concentration, pessimistic attitude.

TCM Perspective

In TCM, the bodily reaction to stress is the result of a dysfunction of the circulation of “Qi” (Energy) which in turn induces dysfunction of the whole body. In TCM, the “Liver” system is the most affected by stress. That is because the “Liver” system is most responsible for the regulation of Qi, and is also considered as a reservoir of blood. The Liver is responsible for regulating the circulating blood volume, which is an important source of energy. When the liver functions properly, there is smooth circulation of Qi and blood, but when there is disruption to these functions, health concerns can ensue. For example, in some cases we might see “hyperactivity of Liver Qi”, manifesting as headaches, dizziness and outbursts of anger. In TCM we call this “Liver Fire”.

TCM treatment is based on the “pattern differentiation”. In simple terms, this means that practitioners do not focus solely on symptoms, but rather aim to treat the root cause of the disharmony. As a result, the treatment often not only relieves the symptoms induced by stress, but also increases bodily resistance to stress.
